Hauled to Hearth

Ever died in Minecraft and just... lost everything? Not anymore. Hauled to Hearth steps in the moment you'd normally see the death screen and gives you something gentler, and if you're the kind of player who wants your close calls to actually mean something, something a little sharper too.

When you'd die, the world fades to black. You lie there in the dark for a moment, just long enough to wonder if this is really it, and then warmth creeps back in. Spore blossoms drift past. Cherry leaves settle around you. A heartbeat, steady and close, tells you you're not alone. You wake up back home, a little worse for wear, with a quiet voice in your chat letting you know you're safe.

That's the heart of it. No more instant "You Died." Just a rescue, dressed up as something worth remembering.

Hardcore Mode

Playing Hardcore and want the tension without the total loss of a single unlucky death? Hauled to Hearth now respects it properly.

On a Hardcore world (or for a Hardcore flagged player, if you're running Adaptive Difficulty alongside this), you get a limited number of free rescues instead of unlimited ones, configurable, so you can keep it razor thin or give yourself a little breathing room. Every rescue but the last plays out exactly like normal. Your last one, though, gets its own quiet, unsettling send off: a shorter title, a warning in the subtitle, and a fuller, handwritten feeling note waiting for you in chat. Once those are spent, the next death is real. The screen still cuts to black first, a shorter, sharper blackout than the rescue version, with no gentle reveal after it, and then it's the death screen, same as vanilla Hardcore has always demanded.

If you're not running Adaptive Difficulty, none of this changes how the mod behaves. It's purely additive.

What's Configurable

Everything here lives in the mod's config, accessible in game from the Mods menu (via NeoForge's built in config screen) or by hand editing hauledtohearth-common.toml in your instance's config folder.

  • XP Penalty: how much experience you lose on a rescue, from a light tax to a full wipe.
  • Rescue Health: how much health you wake up with. A flat 3 hearts (the original, and still the default), half your max health, or a full heal.
  • Title & Subtitle Text: the words shown on a normal rescue, plus the font used to display them.
  • Hardcore Rescue Count: how many free rescues a Hardcore player gets before a death becomes real (1 to 3).
  • Hardcore Final Title & Subtitle: the short, unsettling text shown on a Hardcore player's very last rescue.
  • Hardcore Final Chat Message: the longer message left behind in chat after that last rescue. This one's meant to linger, so make it yours.

Everything's text, so reword all of it to fit your own pack's tone: cozy, ominous, funny, whatever you're going for. The defaults lean gently spooky, but they're just a starting point.

A Note on Safety Nets

This mod deliberately overrides keepInventory to true. The rescue is the safety net, and losing your inventory on top of it felt like undercutting the whole point. If that doesn't fit your pack, that's worth keeping in mind before you install it.

Built for modpacks that want death to feel like a moment, not a punishment. Until you tell it not to.
