Hardcore Revive
Dying is not the end. It is a problem for your friends to solve.
Hardcore Revive turns death into a group mechanic. You do not drop to spectator and you
do not lose the world — you come back as a ghost, and the only way out is for a
living player to build an altar and perform a resurrection ritual. Every death you rack
up makes the next one harder to walk away from.
Built for a small server with friends. Every single line of text is translated, so
everyone plays in their own language.
You die, you become a ghost
No spectator mode, no death screen. You respawn instantly as a ghost:
- Permanently invisible, no collision with anything.
- Zero interaction range — no breaking blocks, no opening chests, no hitting anyone.
- Immune to damage, fire, drowning and hunger, with night vision so you can still follow
your friends around and watch them fail to rescue you. - Soul particles trail behind you so the living notice you are there.
- A floating sign above your head shows your name, your death count and the ritual level
needed to bring you back. - Ghosts talk in chat with a
[Ghost]prefix, and cannot earn advancements.
The moment you die, the exact altar recipe for your level is printed in chat, in each
player's own language. Nobody has to alt-tab to a wiki. Any living player can also type
/trigger hcr_menu to see the altar for every ghost currently in the world.
Five ritual levels
The level is per player and climbs with each of your own deaths, capped at 5. A living
player builds the matching 3×3 altar, stands on the centre block with the ghost within
10 blocks, and holds right click with the Ritual Totem.
| Level | Corners | Sides | Centre | Extra | Offering |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gold block | Iron block | Iron block | — | 1 diamond |
| 2 | Gold block | Iron block | Diamond block | — | 1 golden apple |
| 3 | Polished basalt | Blackstone | Magma block | 4 soul torches on the corners | 1 blaze rod + 1 magma cream |
| 4 | Quartz block | Blackstone | Respawn anchor | 4 soul torches on the corners | 4 netherite scrap |
| 5 | Crying obsidian | Obsidian | Netherite block | 4 soul torches on the corners | 1 netherite ingot + 1 nether star |
And what coming back costs you:
| Level | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 | Full health + Regeneration I for 30 seconds |
| 2 | Full health + Weakness I for 2 minutes |
| 3 | Half health + Fire Resistance + Hunger I, and −1 max heart permanently |
| 4 | Half health and −3 max hearts permanently |
| 5 | Half health and −5 max hearts permanently |
The heart loss is a floor per level, not a running total: being revived twice at level 5
still costs 5 hearts, not 10. Craftable Hearts are how you win them back.
If anything is wrong — altar misbuilt, offering missing, no ghost nearby — the totem is
handed straight back and chat tells you exactly what failed. No silently eaten items.
Craftable Hearts
A Heart (1 diamond + 4 iron blocks) grants +1 permanent max heart, capped at +10
per player. It is how you win back the heart a level 5 ritual takes from you, and it gives
the late game something to sink iron into.
197 advancements
Four dedicated tabs: serious progression, stupid ways to die, ghosts and rituals, and
grinding thresholds. Each one announces itself in chat in each player's own language
and hands out a themed reward chest — place it, open it, and it fills with loot.
Reward chests deliberately never contain an item that another advancement is watching for,
so opening one never chain-completes half the tree.
Everything else
- Scaling difficulty — newly spawned hostile mobs gain +5% health and damage every 5
Minecraft days, stacking up to day 100. Chat announces the tier each dawn. - World leaderboard posted every 10 minutes: most kills, most blocks mined, most
deaths, longest time alive, most distance walked, most revivals, most rituals performed. - Player health in the TAB list, drawn as hearts.
- Sidebar with the world day, current ghosts, living players and total deaths.
- Regeneration I near a lit campfire.
Languages
Every piece of text uses translation keys. Install the companion resource pack and each
player automatically sees English or Spanish depending on their own client language.
Without it everything still reads fine — it falls back to Spanish, never to raw translation
keys.
Install
- Drop the zip into
<world>/datapacks/. Restart the server or run/reload. - Install the companion resource pack (linked on this page) for the translations.
- Keep
hardcore=falseinserver.properties. Vanilla hardcore forces spectator on
death and blocks respawning, which fights the ghost system. This pack provides the
punishment on its own.
To remove everything cleanly: /function hardcore_revive:uninstall. It deletes the floating
signs, strips every attribute modifier, revokes the advancements and removes all
scoreboards, so you can delete the folder afterwards with nothing left behind.
Compatibility
Every objective is prefixed hcr_, the team is hcr_ghosts and all entity tags start with
hcr_. It overrides no vanilla files at all — everything lives under the
hardcore_revive namespace except the two required function tags (load and tick),
which are additive. It cannot conflict with other data packs.
