MakeUp: Dead Days

Hi I'm Alex, I don't know much about making shaders, in fact this is my first shader ever, recently I was playing two things.

1. Kane & Lynch, both 1 and 2.

2. A roblox game I was just messing around with on roblox studio (it's literally a prototype of Kane & Lynch but for roblox).

I got obsessed by that gritty and brutal thing seen in Kane & Lynch, the unlikeable characters that for some reason I found it a bit real? not quite like gta where you either got a funny or serious character just doing whatever people asks them for money and power, I felt like actual people who didn't like or cared for each other, but desperately needed each other, I got obsessed by that gritty and "ugly" reality of the game, so I decided to simply create a reshade preset (yes you can do it in mc idk why i know that) based off that, but that idea got quickly ditched because of how heavy and unoptimized and how actually ugly it was, so instead I've watched a couple of videos, and I started modifying light weight minecraft shaders, why instead of making my own?

1. I'm dumb

2. It's easier I suppose.

3.I got a shitass pc, which can't do a thing besides mc and some older games sub 2015 (i got an rx 550 4gb, i7 2600 and 16gb ram (pretty decent, FOR A DECADE AGO, or nahh ig it was bad when it got released as well))

And so I did, I started modifying it till it looked that way, the way it's on the website, and thus MakeUp: Dead Days was born, got it? Dead Man, Dog Days, yhhh it's a pretty bad title, but enjoy :>

what's actually in it

Real quick — most of the heavy lifting (shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, volumetric clouds, bloom, water, basically all the "why does this actually look good" stuff) isn't mine. That's Javier Garduño's MakeUp Ultra Fast Shaders, I just found a lightweight base that could actually run on my potato and started messing with it from there.

What I actually added on top:

camera shake, cause handheld footage isn't steady
grain + scanlines, tape noise basically
extra vignette
cranked up contrast and desaturation on top of what MakeUp already does
a color tint, cooler in the shadows warmer in the highlights, trying to get that old camcorder sensor look
jpeg/video compression artifacts (yeah, like that reshade effect that is heavily unoptimized), blocky compression, color bleeding, banding, all that
a pillarboxed frame, black bars on the sides, like an actual old camcorder recording
a blinking REC dot
a date stamp — year's always 2007, never changing that, non negotiable — but the month and day actually pull from your pc's real clock
a clock, actual hour:minute:second, also pulled from your real clock, not minecraft's fake day/night one
a battery icon in the corner cause I thought it'd be funny/fitting

Everything above is its own on/off switch or slider in a "Kane & Lynch" tab in the shader options screen, so if you don't want the HUD stuff or whatever, just turn it off, none of it's glued together.

credits

Base shader is MakeUp Ultra Fast Shaders by Javier Garduño (LGPL v3.0). I didn't touch the actual lighting/shadows/reflections/color stuff, that's all him, I just slapped a camcorder on top of it.
