The Class 700 is the backbone of the Thameslink network, built to handle massive passenger flows straight through the heart of London from Bedford, Peterborough, and Cambridge down to Brighton and the south coast. Because it transitions constantly between the $25\text{ kV AC}$ overhead wires on the East Coast/Midland Main Lines and the $750\text{ V DC}$ third-rail network south of the Thames, getting the switchgear and roof line right was a top priority.
